Dr. Rubeena Kidwai
An estimated 1 in 8 Pakistanis experience psychological distress, yet most never seek care: stigma, poor access, high out-of-pocket costs, and roughly one mental-health professional per 500,000 people. Untreated mental illness costs Pakistan about $4B a year in lost productivity.

BIG IDEA
A mental health phone help-line
Watch the pitch
The mission
Accessible, affordable, stigma-free mental health care for every Pakistani.
How it works
A helpline coordinator, supported by an AI-powered WhatsApp bot and IVR, triages every caller. Urgent cases are flagged; others are booked into a structured 40-minute consultation with a licensed psychologist, with referrals to psychiatrists where needed, delivered through a virtual infrastructure of multilingual clinicians working remotely across Pakistan.
The dream
A government-run national mental health helpline, powered by Taskeen's design, systems and training, serving millions. Doer and payer at scale: government.
Potential for impact at scale
Read against four questions, in the context of the organisation’s stage: is the impact good enough, is the problem big enough, is the model simple enough to deliver at scale, and is it cheap enough for whoever pays at scale.
Good enough · impact and evidence
70% of people supported show clinically meaningful improvement on PHQ-9 and GAD-7; 89% satisfaction; $117 per YLD averted.
Big enough · addressable market
A 1-in-8 prevalence in a country of 250M, and a phone line reaches wherever there is a signal.
Simple enough · to deliver at big scale
Centralized triage plus remote multilingual clinicians; an AI WhatsApp chatbot (Taskeen Dost) is next, to extend lay counselling and strengthen triage.
Cheap enough · for payers at scale
$23 per patient today, targeting under $15 at scale.
